As family outings, friends and professional alliances have gravitated north, Barbeau Architects has inevitably and happily established a presence on the North Shore of Minnesota's Lake Superior. For us this is where the joys of architecture and design can happily meld with the other important things: fly-fishing and kayaking, camping and canoeing and lesisurely drives.

It is our aim to create, maintain and expand close ties with the business community north of Duluth that thrives on and around Highway 61. EnvironDesign, out of Hovland, is our strategic partner in this mission to provide the best in design and construction consulting services in the area. EnvironDesign is skillfully guided by my good friend and design colleague Richard J. Olson, CID. A link to his website can be found below.

Sawbill Outfitters. Tofte, MN. The Barbeau family traces links here that date back to the early 1940's. This remodelling and expansion project was completed with Richard J. Olson in 2005.

Richard J. Olson, CID, against the backdrop of one of his special fireplaces. Olson and Barbeau have collaborated on numerous commercial projects over the years, both on and off the North Shore. Olson's firm EnvironDesign is based in Hovland, MN, a few miles up the highway from Grand Marais.

Stone Harbor Wilderness Supply, Grand Marais, MN. After Fall River Holding purchased the Superior Coastal Sports Building in early 2010, Barbeau-Olson re-collaborated to design an addition to the building and to re-image the property. One thousand square feet were added to bring the total retail area up to 3,600 SF. The top floor Owner's apartment and the rental apartment unit below were finally completed to fulfill the new owner's needs and the original design vision.

Superior Coastal Sports Building, Grand Marais, MN. Another Barbeau-Olson collaboration in Downtown Grand Marais. This 3-story retail store and outfitters building has a top floor Owner's apartment with a rental apartment unit below, with windows to the east overlooking the shore of Lake Superior.

Moondance Coffee House Building, Lutsen. A multiple-use building that houses Lutsen Real Estate offices, a full-service credit union (complete with a drive thru-window), as well as the coffee shop. Since its completion in 2006, the building has become a focal point for community gatherings.
